About

I am a Christian, diehard outdoorsman, outdoor journalist/communciator, a pro-staff member for a number of great companies such as Real Avid, Athens ArcheryCommando Calls, Strut & Rut, and a firm believer that we need to better understand the gift of Creation and our role in it. I am especially passionate about introducing young people to the outdoors and educating them to its Majesty. I believe nature is the world’s most exciting and interactive experience, not XBox. I am a 1990 graduate of Liberty University and went on to attend seminary at Luther Rice and grad school at Virginia Tech where I studied Natural Resources so that I could better educate others to all that God created.  Professionally, I am actively involved in adventure leadership and outdoor recreation programming for youth and adults, serve as a professor of Adventure Leadership and Outdoor Ministry at Liberty University, am a military veteran (and active reservist) and I have a 20-year law enforcement career behind me. Additionally, I write frequently for several print and online magazines, and am involved in the production of outdoor digital media.  I speak at conferences, youth events, and wild-game banquets, and love to share God’s message and how exciting life can be when living the Ultimate Adventure. I am currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA). For more information about me check out my website, www.GilmerOutdoors.com.

Oh…and how did I get the name, “The Backcountry Chaplain”?  A few years ago while sharing and ministering to a group of men and women at a large outdoor trade show, a gentleman named David Blanton commented to me, “You’re just like a chaplain, but a backcountry chaplain.” I had never used a title before to describe what I did but I really liked the the name and after that it just sort of stuck with me.

I hope I can be an encouragement and resource to you.

  1. Doug … I love your blog. I’ve read through several of your articles and love the spiritual analogies you relate to the outdoors. I’m trying to do something similar. Thanks for posting these articles!
